The Morning Rush

morning rush

With a jolt, I woke up to the sound of my blaring alarm. One glance at the clock told me I was 30 minutes late, and the school bus would be here any minute. Without a second thought, I flicked the blanket away, unwittingly letting the cold January air engulf me.

In a mad rush, I dashed to the bathroom, skipping out on my hot shower, resorting to brush my teeth, haphazardly comb my hair, and put on my uniform, only to stare at the reflection of a total mess in the mirror. But I had no choice, one more day of being late, and my mother was sure to completely lose it on me.

Throwing my books in my bag, and vigorously rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I ran down the stairs, stumbling and tripping over my own two feet. I greeted my mother, telling her I had no time for breakfast, that the bus would be here any minute.

All she did was give me a confused look, no taunts or berates. Questioningly, I raised my eyebrows, “what?”
She shook her head and said, “nothing, it’s just that today is a Sunday.”
